PE and Sport Premium
Good health supports successful learning. Successful learners support health. Education and health are inseparable.
We pride ourselves on being an active member of the North Oxfordshire School Sports Partnership (NOSSP). As part of this partnership we have our Primary PE mentor, Chris Pemble, providing weekly support as our in-house Primary PE specialist. Along with five other local Primary Schools, Chris has been employed to help us continue to develop the confidence and competence of all teachers in delivering high quality PE lessons. He will also help support the engagement of all pupils in healthy and active lifestyles in an effort to foster a lifelong participation in regular PE and physical activity. He continues to deliver lunchtime active clubs. Also, as part of this partnership we invite the Cherwell Youth Activators into school to run active lunch clubs, afterschool clubs and mental health support for some of our older children.
The PE curriculum is taught and planned for using the tool GetSet4PE. We have one indoor and one outdoor one-hour sessions of PE per week in Key Stage 1 and 2. Children are assessed on their abilities three times per year.
As part of our affiliation with NOSSP, we provide access to intra school competitions for every year group, in a wide variety of sports and activities throughout the year. This includes Rugby, Football, Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Athletics and Cross Country. Children get the experience of travelling to another school to participate and compete against other children their own age, from different settings.
We are also in close partnership with Banbury United Football Club. A member of their team (Ryan) supports active lunchtimes four times per week. We also offer a free afterschool football coaching session with Banbury United Football coaches all year.
Active lunchtimes are a key priority for us at Orchard Fields Community School and we provide a range and variety of outdoor play equipment accessible by the children through simple storage solutions. Children are encouraged to use these resources year-round.
Wet weather can still be an issue for really active lunchtimes and to somewhat negate this, we have invested in wellington boots for the children to use during these periods. The use of the boots has allowed the school field to be accessible for the whole year.
As part of the Opening School Facilities funding we have been able to purchase a bike library for the children to use within club time at school. These bikes are maintained and stored on site and loaned to other organisations in the local area without charge.
We are now entering the third year of the OSF funding and we have been able to secure more funding to be able to open a balance bike library. This will be opening within the academic year.
We also offer all the children in Year 5 and 6 Level 1 and 2 Bikeability training both on and off site. This is important training for the children who will then be able to borrow the bikes from the bike library with the skills to be able to navigate the local roads.
Swimming is an important life skill and to further develop our children’s swimming abilities we offer swim training in Year 4 and a full year of top-up swimming to the children in Year 6.
We have now been recognised as a School Games Mark Platinum School for 2023/2024 and we will continue to strive to maintain this accolade by providing the children at Orchard Fields Community School with the highest possible quality PE provision, before and after school active clubs and access to a wide variety of sports and activities.
